| Are you happy with
the way your car looks right now? So was I, shown here on my second attempt
to make it to Niagara Falls, in 1997. My safety suggestion to
you...WATCH OUT FOR DEER! The photo below shows what my car looked like on the first
attempt to make it to Niagara Falls that same summer. No, that's not me, just one of the
nice folks who stopped to offer assistance. It took the doctors at the Noyes
Hospital in Dansville, New York about an hour to pick all the glass out of my face and
arms. Fortunately, the deer didn't get all the way through the windshield, or I sure
wouldn't be selling coaster calendars right now. I was very happy to be alive that
day, but many others do not make it through a collision with deer and other large animals.
The weird thing about this is that the fellow in the photo had those little deer whistle
things on the front of his car...meant to keep the deer away, but this deer came charging
onto the road anyway, and this guy was driving right behind me. Do they work?
Well, I would say they work, but not in the way that one would expect or hope.
Another really weird thing about this crazy deer was how I
sensed it hours earlier. I drove overnight through PA and NY, and right as I left PA
that night, something made me very aware of deer the whole trip up there. I
strained my eyes to see down the road, looking for the outline or their glowing eyes, and
even honked the horn through banks of fog to scare away any hiding deer. Notice in
the photo, it was daylight when I finally saw a deer, but was still unable to avoid
hitting it. All night, I was super-paranoid about seeing a deer, and sure enough,
at 7am, I nail one anyway. Is that weird or what?
Have a nice week, and keep safe! |
